The
Divine 9 consists of nine historically black Greek fraternities and sororities.
With that being said, each fraternity and sorority was founded by African
American students. They were also founded on predominately African American
college campuses Something that can be intimidating yet at the same time can be
attracting to students seeking to join an organization. Now with that being
said, I do understand that they are many cultural differences among the
different people groups and that those differences often cause us to lean
towards those most like us or where we came from as far as where we were born
and the backgrounds. This has raised eyebrows on if blacks were being reverse
racists for having their own fraternities and sororities, when this is not the
case at all. In fact, just because you’re not black doesn’t mean you can’t be
accepted in a black fraternity or sorority. The fraternities and sororities in
the Divine 9 attract students because of their morals and ethics. If you just
so happen to not be black, that is perfectly fine. With me being apart of Omega
Psi Phi, a fraternity that’s part of the divine 9, my hope is that as that white students interact
more as a broader part of campus life, they will begin to realize that we can
be drawn to each other by similarities that run deeper than the color of our
skin.
