Social media has increasingly
become a part of most people’s lives in the past decade, with it playing a
bigger part in some genders and age groups than in others. Whether it is
Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, people of all ages enjoy some sort of online
communication. For example, I am twenty years old and most of my friends who
are near my age prefer Instagram over other social networks, with most of them
using Twitter, as well. I notice that women and girls post more than men,
(especially more selfies), and we are checking our accounts more often than men
are. My mom is in her fifties and she and her friends mostly use Facebook,
while a few of the braver ones Tweet, or at least look at Twitter. There is a
great deal of recipe sharing and pictures of children and grandchildren. My
grandma is seventy-seven years old and she does not use any social media, but
she loves for me to show pictures from mine, and for me to keep her informed.
My grandpa, on the other hand, thinks it is all silly! These patterns are
indicative of gender specific and age specific social media.
