Why Women "Travel in Packs"

One pattern that I’ve noticed for a while is that women rarely go out alone(I've actually had a guy ask me this).  We don’t shop alone, we don’t travel alone, go to restrooms, and we don’t travel alone.  We frequently move in groups.  The cause is pretty simple: we are often the subject of attack.  It’s safer to travel in groups of twos and threes.  We live our lives in the “buddy system” especially during college.  I’ve been a friend’s “designated walker”, so I can make sure that she makes it back from a party without being attacked. 1 in 4 college age women will be sexually assaulted, so we are forced to take precautions.  If we are attacked, we are often asked: “Why were you alone?”  So, not only do we stick together to avoid attack but to avoid victim blaming.  Women travel in packs for the same reason zebras do, to avoid becoming prey.
