Most people don't realize the differences between the study habits of guys and girls; studying is studying, right? The way people study goes far beyond their own personal preferences, and is highly influenced by societies expectations.
Gender may not seem like a determining factor for studying patterns, but it is, perhaps, one of the most important. Women in American society are looked upon as dependent and unintelligent. Seeing a group of girls studying together is normal; we don't even think to question it. However, seeing a group of guys studying together raises questions. Men in our
society are expected to be intellectually superior and independent; they do not need the extra help of a group setting like women are seen as requiring. Even if a man is struggling and wants the help, asking for it would be seen as weak, and men in our society detest being seen as such as it is considered "unmanly". Women are encouraged to study in groups and ask for help frequently, displaying their "inferiority". Both sexes are expected to follow these unspoken rules and are punished if they do not.
Even the minor task of studying is influenced by society. The illusion that men are above women is on display constantly, with the pressures to comply increasing. These societal expectations are hurting and limiting our youth, pushing girls to excel academically and ridiculing boys who try to do the same. They are noted for being superior athletes and this is not because all men are able-bodied, but because that is what society expects. These silent limitations instill a corrupt mindset about both sexes, and if gender discrimination is due to stop, then these ideals must stop first.
