As a student attending a four year institution with over 12,000 students, I have taken note as to how the different members that make up campus treat our campus. I have particularly taken note of professors versus students.
Students, who make up the majority of the campus population, utilize sidewalks far less often than professors do.
Professors, on the other hand, more often than not roam campus via sidewalk, seldom veering off the pavement path to get to classes or their offices.
Using my sociological imagination, I began thinking of possibilities for an explanation. At first, I concluded that the price for apparel ran higher for professors, and it follows that the upkeep for said apparel is laborous. Realizing that students can spend as much on clothing as professors can, I considered some sort of regulation set forth by upper administration that asked professors to stick to sidewalks. Realizing that this was a bit irrational, I concluded that professors stick to sidewalks because their attitudes toward their profession and respect for their institution influences them to respect their campus. Thus, professors utilize sidewalks far more than students do.
